Everyone loves to take a day off and spend it in bed every once in a while. There is nothing better than a day of doing nothing, just lying in bed and maybe watching some TV during the day. A great Sunday for many people during football season would be to never leave the bed and watch the games all day. How about doing it for more than two months straight though?
That’s exactly what happened a few years ago. NASA actually paid people up to $18,000 to stay in bed for seventy days in a row. It was very good pay for minimal work. They were doing research that will help them in the future of space travel.
#1. Amazingly people got paid to stay in bed.
NASA paid people $18,000 to lie in bed for seventy days in a row. Are you mad that you missed it?
#2. Yes, you heard that correctly!
All they had to do was lay in bed and do nothing. When the people were chosen they were probably pretty happy about it.
#3. They weren't alone though.
There wasn't a lot of privacy as is normal with testing experiments. Researchers want to keep an eye on as many people as possible at one time.
#4. They were eased into bed.
During the first two to three weeks, people were allowed to move in and out of bed. After that, they were confined to the mattress.
#5. There was plenty to do.
Once the initiation period was over, the patients could not leave their bed. The only time they were allowed to get up was for testing purposes.
#6. There was plenty of testing to be done.
Some of the testing required them to lay with their heads back and feet up. They underwent muscle, bone and heart tests.
#7. Then some more testing.
There was also a lot of testing done on the circulatory and nervous systems. Researchers conducted additional testing on nutritional condition as well as the body’s ability to fight infections.
#8. People learned a thing or two as well.
There were plenty of NASA employees to explain things. They also shared plenty of stories of what they had done.
#9. Matrix, anyone?
There was plenty of different types of testing that was conducted. It was very similar to other types of research that has been done over the years.
#10. A lot of new friends were made.
Not being able to get out of bed led to some friendships being formed. After all, there was plenty of time to be killed and there were plenty of people around.
#11. It was a great way to earn some cash.
Getting paid to play Guitar Hero on PS4? Yes that's exactly what happened!
#12. They got a paycheck for doing this!
Laying in bed offered a higher difficulty level for playing the guitar but the pay was well worth it. Slash would never practice this way, but he would probably enjoy the cash!
#13. There were plenty of ways to kill time.
Once the guitar wars were over, it was on to some Connect Four. The popular game from the 80's was a pretty popular choice during the study.
#14. Looks like a good time, huh?
Is there a better way to make money than to rest in bed and watch a movie? Possibly not, and that's exactly what these people did during non testing times.
NASA didn't just give away all of that money for nothing. There was plenty of testing that they wanted to do, but people didn't seem to mind very much.
#16. Does this look familiar?
Some of the equipment that was used rivaled what Michael Jackson used to use. It obviously wasn't the same thing but it certainly looks close!
#17. They made $1,200 a week doing this.
Despite all of the testing that happened, it was a pretty relaxed atmosphere to be in. This guy doesn't look too upset at all.
#18. They were able to stay in touch with everyone.
Everyone had use of a laptop so they could keep in touch with family and friends. They had access to the internet and could check emails, scores and watch movies.
#19. It was a different experience for sure.
People were put into scenarios that they never thought they would be involved in before. It was a learning experience for both researchers and researchees.
#20. It was pretty comfortable.
There weren't too many people that complained about the comfort level, if any. If you can read a book like this, it couldn't have been that bad.
#21. You won't find this on the list of worst jobs.
There are plenty of lists out there about the best and worst jobs to have. This one would certainly not be on any worst job list!
#22. Not only did they get paid but it helped others as well.
The research was being done for a good cause. NASA was trying to learn more so they could apply what they learned to the astronaut programs.
#23. The testing helped astronauts.
What the NASA researchers learned will be applied to future flights into space. It could change the way the ships are designed or even the design of the flight suits.
#24. Could this be what future rocket ships look like?
Currently the people who go up to space sit in chairs inside the rocket ships. This research though could lead to major design changes.
#25. Maybe in the future we could take a nap on earth and wake up on another planet.
One day we could see astronauts go to sleep while on Earth and wake up on a completely different planet. With all of the research that is always being done, you just never know what we will wake up to each day.
